Minor surgery may protect tooth roots during braces treatment

NCT ID NCT07458139

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two methods of moving canine teeth after premolar extraction: one with a minor surgical procedure (corticotomy) to speed movement, and one without. Sixty patients aged 12–30 will have their root length measured before and after treatment to see which method causes less root shortening. The goal is to find a safer way to straighten teeth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Modified corticotomy (a minor surgical procedure to speed up tooth movement)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a minor surgical step reduces root damage during orthodontic treatment, leading to safer tooth movement.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants. The results may not apply to all patients, and the surgical procedure carries typical risks like swelling or infection.
