New hope for PMR patients: drug may cut steroid dependence

NCT ID NCT05533164

First seen Feb 04, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tests whether rituximab, a drug that targets certain immune cells, can help people with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) stop or reduce their steroid medication. PMR causes pain and stiffness, and long-term steroid use has serious side effects. The trial includes 174 adults with PMR who are unable to lower their steroid dose below 5 mg per day. Researchers will compare how many people achieve steroid-free remission at 52 weeks with rituximab versus placebo.
