Artery-Saving surgery may reduce complications after esophageal cancer removal
NCT ID NCT07363629
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at 120 people with esophageal cancer who had a type of surgery called McKeown esophagectomy. Half had the right gastric artery preserved, and half had it tied off. The goal was to see if preserving the artery lowers the chance of leaks or narrowing where the new connection is made. Results could help surgeons choose the safer approach.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgical procedure (right gastric artery preservation or ligation during McKeown esophagectomy)
What this could lead to
If preserving the artery works better, it could reduce serious complications like leaks or narrowing after esophageal cancer surgery, improving recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with 120 people, so results may not apply to all patients. The benefit may be small or not outweigh the risk of leaving the artery intact.
