New heart valve fix without Open-Heart surgery shows promise

NCT ID NCT07174531

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new device called the Renato® system, which allows doctors to place a new heart valve inside a failing one using a thin tube (catheter), avoiding repeat open-heart surgery. It enrolled 150 patients with deteriorated bioprosthetic valves who were at high risk for surgery. The goal was to see if the procedure is safe and effective at restoring valve function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Renato® transcatheter valve-in-valve system (a new artificial heart valve delivered through a tube)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a safer, less invasive option for patients with a failed heart valve who are too high-risk for repeat open-heart surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a registry study, not a randomized trial, so results may be less definitive. The procedure still carries risks like stroke or need for a pacemaker, and long-term durability of the new valve is unknown.
