New study tests if rehumanizing thoughts can reduce suicidal ideation
NCT ID NCT06713473
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether reducing feelings of being 'less than human' can lower suicidal thoughts and increase oxytocin levels. Fifty adults aged 18-40 with moderate self-dehumanization and current suicidal thoughts will be randomly assigned to a rehumanization exercise or a control group. Researchers will measure changes in suicidal ideation and blood oxytocin levels before and after the intervention.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward a new psychological approach to reduce suicide risk by addressing feelings of dehumanization.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It tests a brief intervention, not a treatment, and may show no significant effect.
