New probe aims to slash thyroid surgery complication
NCT ID NCT07416149
First seen Feb 24, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study tests whether a device called PTeye, which uses near-infrared light to help surgeons see and protect tiny parathyroid glands, can reduce the risk of low calcium levels after total thyroid removal. About 210 adults having total thyroidectomy in Hong Kong will be randomly assigned to standard surgery or PTeye-assisted surgery. The main goal is to see if the probe lowers the rate of significant post-surgery hypoparathyroidism, a condition that often requires lifelong calcium and vitamin D supplements.
