NCT ID NCT05716737

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether low-dose radiation can safely reduce pain from arthritis of the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint). Ten adults over 50 with diagnosed TMJ arthritis will receive six small doses of radiation over two weeks. Researchers will track pain levels and jaw function using questionnaires to see if the treatment is feasible and helpful.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

low-dose radiation (3 Gy in 6 fractions)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce jaw pain from arthritis without surgery or strong drugs.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 10 people, so results may not apply widely. Radiation also carries a small risk of long-term side effects.
