Drug trial aims to wake up paralyzed guts after surgery

NCT ID NCT05334485

Summary

This study is testing whether a drug called pyridostigmine can safely help restart bowel function in patients whose guts become temporarily paralyzed after colon or rectal surgery, a condition called postoperative ileus. About 50 adults who develop this problem after elective surgery will receive either the study drug or a placebo (inactive substance) in addition to standard care. Researchers will measure how quickly patients pass gas and stool, tolerate food, and monitor for any side effects to see if the drug speeds recovery.
