Stitches or not? study tests best way to heal after a skin biopsy
NCT ID NCT04623372
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ways of caring for a small skin biopsy wound: stitching it closed or letting it heal naturally with just a bandage. About 290 adults having a 4mm punch biopsy will be randomly assigned to one method. Doctors and patients will rate the scar's appearance and report pain during healing to see which approach works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If one method proves clearly better, it could simplify healing instructions and improve scar outcomes for millions of skin biopsies each year.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center study comparing two common procedures, so results may not apply to all skin types or biopsy sizes. The outcome is based on subjective scar ratings.
