Scientists test magic mushroom drug on aging brains to fight Alzheimer's clues

NCT ID NCT07386730

Summary

This early-stage study aims to understand how two drugs—psilocybin (from 'magic mushrooms') and dextromethorphan (a cough medicine ingredient)—affect brain activity and inflammation in older adults who feel low well-being. Researchers will enroll 80 healthy adults aged 50-85 to measure brain waves, blood markers, and brain scans before and after taking a single dose. The study will check if these drugs change brain patterns differently in people who have early biological signs of Alzheimer's disease, even though they show no memory problems.
