Magic mushroom therapy tested to soothe the dying

NCT ID NCT04950608

Summary

This small pilot study explored whether a single dose of psilocybin (the active compound in 'magic mushrooms'), combined with supportive talk therapy, could help reduce feelings of hopelessness and distress in people receiving hospice care. Fifteen participants with a terminal illness and significant demoralization received the therapy and were followed for about six months. The main goal was to see if this approach was safe and practical in a hospice setting, while also checking for changes in quality of life, anxiety, and spiritual well-being.
