Magic mushroom therapy targets despair in advanced cancer patients

NCT ID NCT06818994

First seen Mar 20, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This early-stage study tests whether psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) combined with talk therapy can safely reduce feelings of hopelessness and loss of meaning in people with advanced cancer. Fifteen adults aged 18-70 with stage 3 or 4 cancer and high demoralization will receive one 25 mg dose of psilocybin along with six therapy sessions. The main goals are to see if the treatment is safe and if it lowers demoralization scores.
