Gut bacteria and minerals: a new hope for ulcerative colitis remission?

NCT ID NCT07758335

First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial is testing whether adding a Lactobacillus probiotic or a trace element supplement to standard ulcerative colitis treatment can help keep the disease in remission. About 132 adults with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: standard care plus the probiotic, standard care plus the supplement, or standard care alone. The study will measure changes in disease activity and colon healing over six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic and a trace element supplement (zinc, chromium, selenium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, molybdenum)
What this could lead to
If adding probiotics or trace elements to standard treatment helps keep ulcerative colitis in remission, it could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve disease control and reduce flare-ups.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-sized trial, and the benefits are uncertain. Probiotics and supplements may not outperform standard care, and individual responses can vary. Safety is monitored, but digestive side effects are possible.
