New study aims to stop the burn of common anesthesia drug

NCT ID NCT07285980

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested two methods using lidocaine to prevent the pain that often happens when propofol is injected before surgery. 180 adults scheduled for elective surgery were randomly assigned to receive propofol alone, propofol mixed with lidocaine, or a brief lidocaine block before propofol. The main goal was to see which approach best reduced injection pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lidocaine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a simple, effective way to reduce the burning pain patients feel when receiving propofol before surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed trial with no phase designation, so results may not apply to all patients or settings. Lidocaine itself can cause rare allergic reactions or side effects.
