Can a simple feeding pause save premature babies from a devastating gut disease?

NCT ID NCT05213806

Summary

This large international trial aims to find out if temporarily stopping milk feeds before, during, and after blood transfusions can prevent a serious and often fatal gut disease called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in very premature babies. It will compare two standard care approaches—pausing feeds versus continuing feeds during transfusions—in over 4,300 infants born before 30 weeks across hospitals in Canada and the UK. The goal is to determine which feeding strategy is safer and more effective at preventing this devastating complication.
