Breathing machine after surgery may prevent lung complications

NCT ID NCT03629431

First seen Jan 27, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study tested whether using a noninvasive breathing mask (a machine that helps you breathe without a tube) right after surgery could prevent serious lung problems in patients at high risk. 266 adults having surgery were split into two groups: one got the breathing machine in the ICU, the other got standard care. The goal was to see if the machine reduced the number of patients who needed breathing support within the first week after surgery.
