New test aims to predict when patients can safely come off breathing machines

NCT ID NCT06685406

Summary

This study tested whether measuring the amount of fluid in a patient's chest could help doctors predict if they are ready to be taken off a breathing machine (ventilator). Researchers observed 120 critically ill adults to see if this measurement, along with other simple checks, could accurately identify patients at risk of needing the breathing tube put back in. The goal was to find a better, non-invasive way to guide the difficult decision of when to remove ventilator support.
