Can a pre-surgery mist prevent waking confusion after sinus surgery?
NCT ID NCT07677917
First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026
Summary
This study compares two drugs given as a mist before sinus surgery to see if they reduce emergence agitation—confusion, disorientation, or restlessness when waking from anesthesia. Adults aged 21 to 50 having elective functional endoscopic sinus surgery will receive either dexmedetomidine or magnesium sulfate via nebulizer 30 minutes before the operation. The main goal is to measure calmness after anesthesia using a standard pain scale, along with recovery time and agitation severity.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexmedetomidine and magnesium sulphate
What this could lead to
If one drug works better, it could offer a simple, non-invasive way to help patients wake more calmly after sinus surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 50 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Both drugs can cause side effects like slow heart rate or low blood pressure.
