Salt injection tested as emergency heart restarter

NCT ID NCT04316611

Summary

This study aimed to test if a direct injection of potassium chloride could help restart the heart in adults experiencing a specific type of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest where the heart is in a chaotic rhythm (ventricular fibrillation) that doesn't respond to three standard electric shocks. The idea was to see if this approach, inspired by techniques used in heart surgery, could improve survival rates by getting the heart back to a normal rhythm faster and without the side effects of current drugs. The trial was withdrawn before any participants were enrolled.
