Less frequent port flushing may be safe for cancer patients
NCT ID NCT05454189
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether it is safe to flush implanted port devices every 12 weeks instead of the standard every 4 weeks. Ports are small devices placed under the skin to give chemotherapy safely. The study involves 400 cancer patients and will compare how well the ports work and how often complications occur between the two schedules. If successful, it could mean fewer trips to the clinic for patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
implanted port device flushing schedule
What this could lead to
If successful, this could allow cancer patients to have their port flushed less often, reducing clinic visits and inconvenience.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, single-center study. Less frequent flushing might increase the risk of blockages or infections, and results may not apply to all patients.
