Could a simple pill replace IV antibiotics for kidney infections?
NCT ID NCT07236944
First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 36 times
Summary
This study tests whether pivmecillinam pills work as well as standard antibiotics for treating febrile urinary tract infections (kidney infections) in adults. Participants who have already improved after 2-4 days of IV antibiotics will take pivmecillinam or continue standard care. The goal is to see if the oral option is just as effective at clearing the infection and preventing relapse.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pivmecillinam (an antibiotic pill)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simpler, oral option for treating serious kidney infections after initial IV antibiotics, reducing hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 4 trial, so the drug is already approved, but it may not be as effective as standard care for all patients. Side effects or antibiotic resistance could also limit its use.
Conditions
