Aerosol chemo shows promise for Hard-to-Treat stomach cancer
NCT ID NCT05644249
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested a new treatment for stomach cancer that has spread to the lining of the abdomen. The approach combines standard chemotherapy with a procedure called PIPAC, which delivers chemotherapy as a pressurized aerosol directly into the abdomen during a keyhole surgery. The study included 37 patients and aimed to see if this combination is feasible and safe as a first-line treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) with cisplatin and doxorubicin, plus systemic FOLFOX chemotherapy
What this could lead to
If this approach proves effective, it could offer a new first-line treatment option for gastric cancer that has spread to the lining of the abdomen, potentially improving outcomes.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early feasibility study with only 37 participants and no comparison group. The results may not apply to all patients, and the combination treatment carries risks from both chemotherapy and the PIPAC procedure.
