New surgical stitch aims to stop dangerous hernias after cancer operation

NCT ID NCT07426835

Summary

This study is testing if closing a small gap in the diaphragm during robotic surgery for esophageal cancer can prevent a painful complication called a para-conduit hernia. Forty patients having this cancer surgery at Beaumont Hospital will be randomly assigned to either get the new closure technique or the standard approach. Researchers will follow patients for a year with scans to see which method better prevents hernias from forming.
