ICU patients may get fewer unnecessary acid pills thanks to pharmacist checks
NCT ID NCT06225167
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a pharmacist-driven protocol to stop stomach ulcer prevention drugs in ICU patients when they are no longer needed. The goal was to reduce unnecessary medication and side effects without increasing the risk of stomach bleeding. The trial included 120 adult ICU patients and compared those who continued the drugs with those who stopped under the protocol.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pharmacist-driven protocol to discontinue stress ulcer prophylaxis
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could reduce unnecessary use of acid-suppressing drugs in ICUs, lowering costs and side effects like infections.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study (120 patients) focused on protocol feasibility, not a large trial. Results may not apply to all ICUs, and there is a small risk of gastrointestinal bleeding if medication is stopped too early.
