Pelvic floor training eases pouch problems after colitis surgery

NCT ID NCT03148600

First seen Mar 09, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tested whether a physiotherapist-led program of pelvic floor muscle training and behavioral advice could improve bowel function and quality of life in people who had ileo-anal pouch surgery for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis. Fifty-three adults who had recently had their pouch created or stoma reversed were randomly assigned to the training program or standard care. The main goal was to see if the training led to better bowel control and fewer symptoms.
