New diaphragm stimulator aims to free patients from ventilators
NCT ID NCT05998018
First seen Feb 05, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 16 times
Summary
This study tested a device that uses mild electrical pulses to stimulate the phrenic nerve, helping the diaphragm contract and potentially making it easier for patients to wean off mechanical ventilation. It included 60 adults who had been on a ventilator for at least four days and had failed at least one weaning attempt. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either standard care plus the device or standard care alone. The trial was terminated early, so results are limited.
