Could a cholesterol drug delay heart valve surgery?

NCT ID NCT07256197

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tests whether a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors can slow or prevent the worsening of calcific aortic stenosis, a condition where the heart valve becomes stiff and narrow. About 160 adults with mild-to-moderate disease will receive either the drug or a placebo, and researchers will measure changes in valve function and calcium buildup over time. If successful, this could offer a first-ever medication to delay the need for valve replacement surgery.
