New clamping method boosts survival in preterm infants
NCT ID NCT03808051
First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study tested a new way of clamping the umbilical cord in very preterm babies (born before 30 weeks). Instead of clamping at a set time, doctors waited until the baby was stable—breathing well with a good heart rate and oxygen levels—before clamping. The goal was to see if this approach helps more babies survive without serious brain injury or gut disease. About 689 babies took part across multiple hospitals.
