New clamping method could save preemie brains

NCT ID NCT03808051

First seen Jan 09, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study tested a new way of clamping the umbilical cord in very preterm babies (born before 30 weeks). Instead of clamping at a set time, doctors waited until the baby was breathing well and had a stable heart rate and oxygen level. The goal was to see if this approach helps more babies survive without serious brain injury or gut disease. About 689 babies took part across multiple hospitals.
