New surgical scanner aims to prevent accidental gland damage

NCT ID NCT06939946

Summary

This early study tested a new handheld imaging device designed to help surgeons see the tiny parathyroid glands during thyroid surgery. The goal was to see if the scanner could help surgeons avoid accidentally damaging or removing these glands, which can lead to serious complications like low calcium levels. The study involved 20 patients undergoing thyroid surgery to see if the device could reliably identify the glands.
