New study aims to settle debate on best treatment for diverticulitis abscesses
NCT ID NCT07352605
First seen Jan 22, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This pilot study compares two standard treatments for people with diverticulitis who have a large abscess (a pocket of infection) in the abdomen. Half of the 50 participants will get antibiotics alone, and the other half will get antibiotics plus a drainage procedure to remove the pus. The main goal is to see if it's possible to run a larger study, but researchers will also check which treatment works better at clearing the infection within 30 days and preventing the need for emergency surgery.
