New pain block may help chest trauma patients breathe easier

NCT ID NCT05288985

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tests whether a nerve block (erector spinae plane catheter) plus standard painkillers can improve breathing and reduce lung complications in people with broken ribs from chest trauma. About 40 adults with severe pain and reduced lung capacity will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block or standard care alone. The main goal is to see if the nerve block increases lung capacity within 24 hours.
