Which block works best for back surgery pain? new study pits caudal against QLB

NCT ID NCT06398600

First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study looked at 111 adults having lower back surgery to see which nerve block provides better pain relief: a caudal block or a quadratus lumborum plane (QLB) block. Both are ultrasound-guided injections that numb nerves to reduce pain after surgery. The main goal was to see how long patients could go before needing extra pain medicine, and to compare pain scores and safety over 24 hours.
