Teaching patients how pain works may speed up back pain recovery

NCT ID NCT07277517

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) to standard physiotherapy helps people with acute low back pain. PNE teaches patients how the brain processes pain, aiming to reduce fear and avoidance of movement. 48 adults with pain lasting less than 6 weeks will receive either standard care or standard care plus two PNE sessions. Researchers will measure pain, disability, and fear of movement after 4 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Pain Neuroscience Education (educational sessions)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to improve recovery and prevent acute low back pain from becoming chronic.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 48 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The added benefit of PNE over standard care may be modest.
