Skip the gauze? study tests No-Packing approach for abscess recovery
NCT ID NCT07280962
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compared two ways of treating a perianal abscess after draining it: packing the wound with gauze or leaving it open. The goal was to see which approach causes less pain and leads to faster recovery. Forty-four adults with a first-time abscess took part, and researchers measured pain, hospital stay length, and whether the abscess came back within a month.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
surgical gauze packing
What this could lead to
If no packing works as well, patients could experience less pain and shorter hospital stays after abscess drainage.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. There is a chance that skipping packing could increase recurrence risk.
