Massage therapy may boost breast milk supply in new moms

NCT ID NCT07609693

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a special back massage, called oxytocin massage, can help new mothers who feel they aren't making enough milk. The massage aims to trigger the body's natural release of oxytocin, a hormone that helps milk flow. Researchers will measure mothers' confidence in breastfeeding and how well the milk let-down reflex works, comparing those who get the massage to those who receive standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

oxytocin massage

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to help mothers with low milk supply breastfeed more successfully.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 128 participants, so results may not apply to all mothers. The massage may not significantly improve milk production or confidence.
