Arm cuff trick may shield organs during deadly aortic tear surgery
NCT ID NCT07383909
First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study tests a technique called remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) during emergency surgery for a life-threatening tear in the main artery (acute type A aortic dissection). RIPC involves briefly inflating a blood pressure cuff on the arm to trigger the body's own protective responses. Researchers want to see if this simple, safe method can reduce serious complications like heart, brain, or kidney damage after surgery. About 1,300 adults undergoing this emergency procedure will be randomly assigned to receive either RIPC or a sham procedure, and their recovery will be tracked for up to 5 years.
