Could chemoradiotherapy replace surgery for esophageal cancer?
NCT ID NCT07629817
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests whether patients with esophageal cancer who respond well to initial drug therapy can safely avoid surgery and instead receive chemoradiotherapy to preserve their esophagus. Over 1,000 participants will be randomly assigned to either surgery or organ preservation. The goal is to see if the non-surgical approach offers similar cancer control and survival.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Toripalimab, Nab-paclitaxel, Platinum-based Chemotherapy, Radiation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that many patients with esophageal cancer can avoid major surgery and keep their esophagus, with similar cancer control outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a large Phase 3 trial, but it's still early to know if organ preservation is as effective as surgery. There is a risk of cancer recurrence or side effects from chemoradiotherapy.
