Knee surgery pain relief gets a precision upgrade: new trial tests optimal dose

NCT ID NCT06942689

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests different volumes of liposomal bupivacaine, a long-acting painkiller, injected near the nerve in the thigh to numb the knee during surgery. The goal is to find the dose that provides good pain control while minimizing leg muscle weakness. Sixty-three adults having knee surgery will receive one of several volumes, and researchers will measure pain scores and muscle strength. The results could lead to more personalized and effective pain management after knee procedures.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

liposomal bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a precise dosing guide for longer-lasting pain relief after knee surgery with less muscle weakness.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (63 people) focused on dosing, not on proving long-term benefits. The results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
