New study tests nerve block to cut opioid use in hysterectomy recovery
NCT ID NCT07178262
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a nerve block called an erector spinae plane (ESP) block can reduce the need for strong painkillers (opioids) during and after a hysterectomy. Sixty women having elective hysterectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either the ESP block with bupivacaine or a placebo injection. The main goal is to see if the block lowers the amount of fentanyl needed during surgery and tramadol afterward, while also improving pain scores.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bupivacaine (Marcaine) nerve block
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to manage post-surgery pain with fewer opioids, reducing side effects and addiction risk.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. The nerve block may not significantly reduce opioid use, and results may not apply to all patients.
