Can fish oil in IV bags protect the liver?

NCT ID NCT03869957

Summary

This study tested if adding omega-3 fats (found in fish oil) to intravenous (IV) nutrition could help protect the liver in patients with intestinal failure. Intestinal failure means the gut cannot absorb enough nutrients, so patients need long-term IV feeding, which can sometimes harm the liver. Researchers compared a special IV formula with omega-3s to a standard formula in 20 patients over 7 days to see if it reduced markers of stress and inflammation in the body.
