Stretching away dialysis cramps: Nurse-Led program shows promise

NCT ID NCT07262879

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether nurse-led stretching exercises during dialysis sessions can reduce the burden of muscle cramps. Sixty adults on maintenance hemodialysis who had leg cramps were split into two groups: one did supervised lower-leg stretches during dialysis twice a week for 8 weeks, while the other received usual care. The goal was to see if stretching could lower cramp intensity, frequency, and pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
nurse-led lower-limb stretching exercises
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple stretching program could offer a drug-free way to ease painful muscle cramps during dialysis.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with only 60 participants. Results may not apply to all dialysis patients, and the benefit may be modest.
