Which drug best prevents blood pressure drops during spinal anesthesia in older adults?
NCT ID NCT07662408
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests two medications, norepinephrine and phenylephrine, to see which one better prevents low blood pressure caused by spinal anesthesia in patients aged 60 and older undergoing hip surgery. Participants receive one of the two drugs right after the spinal block, and their heart rate and blood pressure are closely monitored. The goal is to find a safer, more effective way to maintain stable blood pressure during surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
norepinephrine and phenylephrine
What this could lead to
If one drug works better, it could become the preferred choice to prevent dangerous drops in blood pressure during spinal anesthesia in older adults.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 62 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. Both drugs can cause side effects like slow heart rate or high blood pressure.
