Could skipping the breathing tube speed heart surgery recovery?
NCT ID NCT07744009
First seen Aug 04, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests whether using a supraglottic airway (a mask-like device) instead of a breathing tube during heart surgery can reduce lung complications and speed recovery. Adults having elective heart valve surgery or bypass will be randomly assigned to either the nonintubated approach or standard anesthesia. The study will compare lung problems, breathing support needs, and ICU stay duration.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nonintubated supraglottic airway anesthesia with early restoration of spontaneous breathing
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could reduce lung complications and shorten ICU stays for heart surgery patients, leading to faster recovery.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is early and may not show clear benefits. There are risks of airway or breathing problems, though rescue intubation is planned if needed.
