Scientists hunt for immune genes that predict severe blood infections

NCT ID NCT03869593

First seen Mar 25, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study looked at how certain immune system sensors (called inflammasomes) respond to E. coli and Staph bacteria in the blood. Researchers analyzed DNA from 60 patients with these bloodstream infections to find genetic mutations that might make some people more likely to develop severe sepsis. The goal was to better understand why some patients get much sicker than others.
