NIH launches major study to unravel why infections worsen rare energy disorders

NCT ID NCT01780168

Summary

This NIH study aims to understand why infections often cause serious health declines in people with mitochondrial diseases—rare disorders where the body's cells struggle to produce energy. Researchers will observe 500 participants, including patients and some healthy volunteers, to study their immune system function and response to standard vaccines. The goal is to gather knowledge that could lead to better future treatments, but this study itself does not test any new medicines or cures.
