Landmark study questions routine antibiotics for tiny babies

NCT ID NCT03997266

Summary

This large study is testing whether giving antibiotics to stable, extremely premature babies in their first week of life does more harm than good. It will compare 802 babies receiving either standard antibiotics or a placebo (saltwater) to see which group has fewer serious complications like severe infections, bowel disease, or death. The goal is to determine if this common hospital practice should be changed to protect these vulnerable infants.
