New blood treatment could give sickle cell patients more time between transfusions

Summary

This study is testing whether blood processed with a special device to keep it low in oxygen works better than regular blood for transfusions in people with sickle cell disease. The goal is to see if this new method helps patients go longer between transfusions and reduces painful complications. About 48 patients who regularly need blood transfusions will receive both types of blood in a crossover design to compare results.
