Faster malaria cure tested on thousands to stop relapses
NCT ID NCT05879224
Summary
This study tested a new way to treat a type of malaria that can hide in the liver and cause people to get sick again. Researchers wanted to see if giving a higher dose of the drug primaquine for a shorter time (7 days instead of 14) was safe and practical. First, patients got a simple finger-prick test to check for a common genetic condition (G6PD deficiency) that can make the drug dangerous. The study, involving nearly 3000 people at clinics across Indonesia, also looked at whether better patient education and follow-up helped the treatment work.
