Breakthrough malaria cure strategy aims to wipe out hidden liver parasites

NCT ID NCT05874271

COMPLETED ⭐️ CURE ⭐️ Sponsor: Macfarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research and Public Health Ltd Source: ClinicalTrials.gov ↗

Summary

This study tested a new strategy to completely cure vivax malaria, a type that can hide in the liver and cause relapses. Researchers first gave patients a simple finger-prick test to check for a genetic condition (G6PD deficiency) that makes the standard cure drug dangerous. Patients who were safe to take the drug then received a shorter, higher-dose treatment course to improve completion rates. The study involved 794 patients in Papua New Guinea and aimed to see if this new approach was practical, safe, and effective for real-world clinics.
